American Consumerism is a topic I find really interesting to deconstruct and analyse as when considering any form of advertisements produced by American for brands such as Mcdonalds, Wal-mart, Apple etc, there is always a hidden meaning hidden within the product which is most commonly found within the American Dream. I have chosen to research the food outlet "Wendy's" as firstly it is a brand which is easily recognised on a high street and secondly I feel it is a brand which most typifies America."Wendys" began its long history in Nov 15th 1969 when Dave Thomas "Opened the first Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers Restaurant, he created something new and different- high quality food made with the freshest ingredients, served the way the customer wanted". With the 6000th Wendy's restuarant introduced in 2001 the statement above reflects a somewhat replected notion of fast-food restaurants throughout America, trying to create a restaurant which produces high quality food yet is aimed at the mass market. Wendy's in itself is therefore not just a brand, but an identity. Not only does it produce food, it creates and recreates an ideology of American society.
When researching the "Wendy's" website, you are immediatly drawn to the homepage portraying a selection of 3 burgers at a cost of 99 cent each (which from my calculations is about 50p each?) Each burger and its fillings look mass made whereby the ability to create a burger at this cost questions its use of ingredients, staff and manufacture costs, therefore in producing the ideology of fast-food chains within America. what affect is this having on people's income?
